transitory mapping

As part of the Magic Carpet 1.0 option studio at UBC SALA, Angela Gmeinwieser reimagined the carpet as a heterotopic space — a shifting, playful, and layered field of encounter. Inspired by Bauhaus weaver Gunta Stölzl’s Schlitzgobelin Rot-Grün and the spatial logic of games like Monument Valley, her project proposed a labyrinthine architectural landscape where movement, access, and meaning constantly shift. At the heart of the maze lies a central heterotopia — an ambiguous space whose function changes based on how it is approached. With vertical thresholds, trap doors, and narrative-driven transitions, Angela’s project became a metaphor for navigating public space and personal identity in a city where openness is not always guaranteed.
