the multi-sensorial carpet

As part of the Magic Carpet 1.0 option studio at UBC SALA, Emma Garmstraker reimagined the white cube gallery as a single, continuous multi-sensorial carpet surface made entirely of spices. Her project challenged the neutrality and visual dominance of the gallery by activating all five senses — smell, taste, sound, touch, and sight—through a tactile, immersive field. Drawing from artists like Olafur Eliasson, Ernesto Neto, and Roelof Louw, the carpet transformed the act of viewing into a full-body experience, reclaiming presence, memory, and embodied perception as essential tools for engaging with space.
